When to use “-om” and when to use “-em” in Slovene?
Kdaj “-om”, kdaj “-em”?
When using the 6th case “Orodnik” (for masculine nouns) in Slovene, we would for example say:
“Vlak” – A train (1st Case)
Na izlet sem šla (šel, m.) z vlakom. – I went on a trip with a train.
We wouldn’t say “Z vlakem“! But some nouns do end with “em” in the 6th case! Let’s see which ones! 🙂
-> If the masculine noun ends with either Ž, C, Č, J or Š then in the 6th case, the noun would have the ending “em“.
Here are some examples:
– Aleš (a man’s name)
“Pogovarjala sem se z Alešem.” – I was talking with Aleš.
– Mož (husband)
“Na kosilu je z možem.” – (She) is at lunch with (her) husband.
– Andrej (a man’s name)
“Jedla sem se z Andrejem.” – I was eating with Andrej.
